How is my PN made?

Did you know? It takes between 2 and 4 hours to make your parenteral nutrition

Your hospital team will send your prescription to our pharmacy team and using your prescription the pharmacy team will create a recipe for your PN and this is then checked by your hospital team.
Calea will then send it to a team called document control, they double check the documents and schedule your delivery.

Your PN is made in an aseptic unit which means it’s a clean and safe environment. The team in the aseptic unit will pick and check all the ingredients needed for your recipe to make the PN bag.

Did you know? There are over 100 people working together to make your PN bags

Once the PN bags are made they are labelled in the aseptic unit before moving on to the next stage; quality control.

The quality control team carry out over 20 checks to make sure every PN bag is safe to use. Some of the checks they carry out is to look for air bubbles in the PN bag or leaks. If the team find it unsafe to use, they will remake your PN bag again.

Once the quality control team have approved your PN bags they are now moved to the pharmacists who will check your PN bags against the recipe and prescription, then they will dispense them.

When your PN bags are ready to go and they will be held in a big walk-in fridge, ready for delivery.
The delivery drivers will come and collect them along with other items that you might need. The delivery vans are set to a specific temperature to make sure your bags are kept cool and safe.
